 In front of the electron beam, these grids are used to protect samples that tend to roll up or fly off. A few years ago, when these grids first became popular, they were suitable for metallurgical leaf ornament samples held in place, and they are currently used for many different fragile samples, from those that are ion-etched to freeze-fractured replicas.
